Fox Island Sandspit Update - 2012
The Sandspit is now open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to respect the privacy of neighbors, carry out dog droppings and trash, and park in designated areas. Continued public use of the property is dependent upon good stewardship by the public, so please keep this area open by doing your part to keep the sandspit clean and safe.
Troop 27 Boy Scouts and Crew 27's Venturers worked on trail improvements, brush removal and cleanup of the property and storage buildings. Several Eagle Scout projects have been underway at the spit since 2012, adding picnic tables, park benches a new staircase to the beach, and other improvements.
Scouts from Venture Crew 27 removed moss from the roof of the old Demolay Clubhouse building recently.
About 50 people attended the PenMet Parks Board meeting on August 20, 2012, where they took feedback from the public regarding the closure, and future plans for use of the property. Virtually everyone present was supportive of keeping the spit open to the public, except for one person.
PenMet Board member Todd Iversen made a motion to spend money to install improved signage at the property, to help make people aware of the private property on either side of the spit, and the park hours & other restrictions. Discussion took place about the main issue concerning the neighbors; the lack of onsite parking.
PenMet is seeking some evidence of previous parking on the upper lot at the spit property, that will allow the use of onsite parking in the future. If you have photos or any recollection of cars parking there, please contact PenMet parks.

HISTORY OF THE FOX ISLAND FIRE DEPARTMENT
From all indications the year of 1956 had the appearance of being very dry and dangerous so on May 17, 1956, Fire District No. 5 loaned a surplus 1941 Ford pumper to Fox Island. The truck was housed at the old store at the ferry landing, which was then owned and operated by Wayne Peterson and Gail McAfee.
Eight years later the voters elected to become a part of Pierce County Fire Protection District Number 5. By 1977 new equipment made additional space a necessity and construction was started on the fire station at Ninth Ave. and Kamus Drive. Living quarters were included in the construction allowing for a resident volunteer firefighter to maintain the equipment and facility. In 1989 the resident quarters were moved to a mobile home adjacent to the station and the interior of the station was remodeled to allow full use of the meeting rooms.
Volunteer firefighters respond to both fire and medical emergencies at any time of day and night. They dedicate one evening each week training with the equipment and learning the latest techniques for preserving life and property.
Our first volunteer firefighters were Cecil Fassett, Harvey Powers, Thane Eckler, Capt. Ward Hunt, and Gail McAfee. Many dedicated people have contributed their time and talents over the years.

The Fox Island Nature Center
The Fox Island Nature Center was founded in October 2004, through a vision of former FICRA President John Ohlson, members of the FICRA Board and the Fox Island Building Trust.
This property was purchased with donations from Fox Island residents through a wildly successful fund raising drive led by John Ohlson, following the 2004 FICRA Fair in August 2004. Over $40,000 was raised in just over 90 days, in one of the most successful fundraising efforts in recent Island history.
In the months that followed, volunteers from local Boy Scout Troops, Girl Scout Troops, FICRA, and the various Fox Island Garden Clubs contributed significant efforts to convert this formerly overgrown property into a nature trail and showcase of native plant life and climactic zones of Washington State.
Thirteen different Eagle Scout projects and one Girl Scout Bronze Award project have been completed between 2004 and 2011, to transform the property into a wonderful community asset.
The Fox Island Nature Center includes several wetland areas, a marsh including a small stream, a rain forest area including several spectacular examples of first-growth nurse logs, second growth trees, a mixed coniferous and deciduous forest in the upland area, park benches, a 60' footbridge and several raised walkways, and a native species garden near the trailhead.
Activities at the Nature Center include hiking, bird watching, plant identification trail, picnicking, and nature photography. Park hours are dawn to dusk, 7 days a week. The Fox Island Nature Center is located at 716 9th Ave, Fox Island, WA 98333.
Watch our Wetlands Virtual Tour
An update on our projects at the Fox Island Nature Center Wetland Park. Thirteen Eagle Scout projects have been completed at the Nature Center, since its opening in 2005.
2011: Scouts build Footbridge to span groundwater stream.
Sravan Konda completes the extension to the raised boardwalk linking the main trail loop to the Western Loop Trail.
2011: Dallas Thornton added a brick pathway around the Native Species Garden, permanently incorporating the engraved bricks commemorating the donors who helped fund the purchase of the Nature Center Property in 2004.
2010: Eagle Scouts Alex Ohlson, Jesse Long, and Grant Toepfer of Fox Island's Troop 27 have built three picnic areas in the undeveloped 'Western Loop Trail' area.
Eagle Scouts Jensen Bond and Max Reetz of Fox Island's Troop 27 have completed trail improvement projects.
2007: Eagle Scout candidate Ryan Eason of Boy Scout Troop 212, has completed the Native Species Garden in the far left hand area of the diagram.
Eagle Scout candidate Garrett McKinney of Boy Scout Troop 212, has built raised walkways across the marshy areas of the nature trail.
Ian Johnson of Boy Scout Troop 217 recently completed his 'Western Loop' trail-building project, which expanded the Nature Center's trail system, and installed plant identification markers along the trails.
Zach Briggs of Boy Scout Troop 282 completed construction of three picnic tables, and a picnic area.
The Cub Scouts have built and installed birdhouses in various areas of the park.
Girl Scout Troop 290, led by Leader Lise' Ohlson completed a flower & shrub garden in the circular area at right. They completed this service project in 2007 to help earn their Girl Scout Bronze Award.

Tanglewood Island
The 'Fox Island Lighthouse' was built by a Dr. Alfred L. Schultz in 1947. He purchased the land for $8000 in 1933, and later he constructed a boys camp called 'Ta-Ha-Do-Wa' on what was then known as Graves Island (another whole story). It was renamed to Tanglewood Island in 1947.
The Island now called Tanglewood changed names when camp 'Ta-Ha-Do-Wa' was built. The lighthouse was lit for a while, but was never used as a navigation aid.
Fox Island's 'Lighthouse' is a non-functioning lighthouse that at one time was Dr Schultz's office and infirmary and residence/office of a camp director. It was nice adjunct to a first class boy's camp. It is located on Tanglewood Island, a privately owned island next to Fox Island. The lighthouse was repainted as a Boy Scout Eagle service project some years ago, and in the 2020's, after 2 decades without it's 'head', a new top with light was installed.
Tanglewood Island was at one time an Indian Burial Ground. The Indians buried their dead in two ways. One, by placing them in canoes together with their possessions and lashing the canoe high off the ground between two trees; the other method, was to bury them in shallow graves, again, together with their possessions.
To the Indians, a burial ground was a sacred place to be treated with great respect. A remote area such as Tanglewood was used so that it could easily be avoided. Unfortunately, to our knowledge, Tanglewood Island is no longer available for parties or rentals. It is somehow tied into the county and zoning and health and other regulations. What we recommend is that you get hold of the Chapel by the Bay and have it there. It is just as picturesque and much more accessible and you can actually see Tanglewood Island from the Chapel.
1/27/14: Fox Island - After standing since 1947, the most-photographed landmark of the Fox Island area, 'the lodge' was demolished, due to rotting wood, foundation damage due to tidal erosion and neglect. Ownership issues over the years prevented timely upkeep of the building, the top of the lighthouse has been missing since 2004, and the main structure fell to the wrecking ball on January 24, 2014.
